On This Day: September 29, 2001

Smuttynose Brewery’s Robust Porter took home its first – soon to be many – gold medal.

On this day, Smuttynose Brewing Company received the news that its year-round Robust Porter took the gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado, beating out 64 other entries in its category. And while it was this particular beer’s first award, it certainly wasn’t its last. Today, the smooth, deceptively drinkable dark and full-bodied ale is the Hampton-based brewery’s most award-winning beer, nabbing additional titles like the gold medal in both 2010 and 2011 at Mondial de la Biere (“World of Beer”) festival in Strasbourg, France. Want to know what all the fuss is about? Head to the 270-barrel brewery’s location on a picturesque 13-acre historic farm for a free tour and tasting or pick it up at a local market by typing in your location on their website’s “beer finder” page.
