Three This Month: Timeless Traditions

Three can’t-miss February events from across the state.

2/7 – 10
103rd Newport Winter Carnival [Newport]

A carnival that’s still going strong after 100 years is certainly worth a visit. In New Hampshire, that’s this month’s 103rd Annual Newport Winter Carnival. The event kicks off with a huge pancake breakfast to fuel you for the weekend ahead. The Carnival offers pageants, parades, midnight skating, and endless activities to keep you warm in the winter wonderland that Newport so beautifully transforms into.

16th Annual Ice Harvest & Winter Carnival

Ever try your hand at harvesting ice before? Now’s your chance. As one of the last areas in the country to practice this old method, each year’s ice harvest doubles as a cool celebration. Remick Museum hosts the Annual Ice Harvest & Winter Carnival, a day full of  fun for the whole family with activities including the 5K snowshoe stampede, antique snowmobile rides, ice fishing, and live music. Of course, there is also plenty of ways to learn the ancient skill of ice harvesting from block cutting, piking, hoisting, and transporting to the ice house.

2/22 – 24
Nansen Ski Club Annual Winter Carnival [Milan]

Each year the Nansen Ski Club, the oldest ski club in America, hosts a festival for families across the Androscoggin Valley to enjoy the best of New Hampshire’s winter activities. Friday night involves ice skating and hot cocoa around a bonfire at the Milan Green. Saturday and Sunday are jam-packed with events such as a 100-mile dogsled race, a broomball tournament, an art sled race (where racers design and create their own sleds out of cardboard), a dinner buffet, dancing and more.
