Three This Month: Wings, Kilts & Radio Theater

Three can’t-miss September events from across the state.

Wingzilla [Berlin]

This barbeque competition isn’t your standard ribs and rubs affair. It focuses solely on chicken wings (hence the name), in which competitors have to show their skills based on creativity and flavor. In addition to plenty of sampling, the day includes horseshoe and cornhole tournaments, the “Killazilla hot wing eating contest,” and a luau ATV poker run as well as family-friendly activities, live music, and a beer tent.

NH Highland Games [Lincoln]

Held at Loon Mountain Resort, this 43rd annual Scottish festival is a weekend of traditional bands and bagpipers, meat pies and Scotch eggs, and plenty of that Gaelic competitive spirit. In fact, the highlight event may just be the famous strongman competition, in which kilt-clad, Shrek-sized athletes – many of who come from the other side of the Atlantic just for these games – perform such impressive feats as the caber toss, hammer throw, and stone carry.

Radio Drama Double Feature [Meredith]

Featuring the classics of Journey to the Center of the Earth and The Lost World, the Winni Players Community Theatre brings you back to the time when radio was king. With live Foley sound, the Players reenact the way old radio shows were performed and recorded to the amusement of the audience.
